A Lazy Harbour Session at Whitstable – A Cold-Water Forfeit!
After a busy week of fishing trips, we were definitely feeling it. Instead of another long, full-on beach session, we decided to keep things simple with a laid-back, fish-from-the-car trip down at Whitstable Harbour.
Sometimes you don’t need a big plan — just a couple of rods, some leftover bait, and good company.
Keeping It Simple
This trip was all about using up what we had left from previous sessions. We headed down with:
Black lug worm
Rag worm
A bit of squid
Nothing fancy, no big expectations — just an easy session with me, Connor, and his mate Eddie.
There was a slight breeze when we arrived, but nothing major. It was definitely on the cold side though. After stepping out and feeling that chill, we quickly realised that fishing from the car — and hiding in there between checks — was going to be a very good shout!
The Crab Feast
We got the rods out, baited up, and settled in. But it didn’t take long to realise something was going on. Our bait wasn’t lasting more than five minutes at a time.
Every retrieve came back stripped clean — lug, rag, squid… gone. We’re pretty sure the local crabs were having an absolute banquet at our expense. It felt like we were running a free seafood buffet for them!
Despite that, it was still nice just being out by the water, even if we were mostly tucked away in the car trying to stay warm.

The Blanking Reality
As the session went on, it became clear that this wasn’t going to be a productive one.
Not a single bite.
Not one proper knock.
Nothing between the three of us.
A triple blank was looking very likely.
But rather than let it turn into a dull, cold session, I decided to spice things up a bit…
The Cold-Water Challenge ❄️🌊
The challenge was simple:
If Connor and Eddie didn’t catch a fish by the end of the session… they had to jump in the sea.
It suddenly became a lot more interesting!
Spoiler alert — they caught absolutely nothing.
So, true to their word, both of them ended up running into the freezing cold sea water at the end of the session. We even had a few onlookers cheering them on, which made it even funnier.
Fair play to them — they took it like champs!
No Fish, No Problem
Even though this session didn’t produce a single fish, it still delivered something just as important — laughs.
Fishing isn’t always about big catches or impressive numbers. Sometimes it’s about getting out, clearing your head, having a joke with your mates, and making memories — even if that memory involves freezing cold sea water and a self-inflicted forfeit.
Would we have preferred a few fish? Of course. Did we still enjoy ourselves? Absolutely.
And the crabs certainly had a good day!
On to the next trip — hopefully with a few more bites and a little less swimming involved 🎣😂
