Battling the Elements at Hythe Beach – Wind, Waves & A Mixed Bag
Some fishing trips are calm, productive, and picture-perfect… and then there are the ones where Mother Nature decides to test your commitment. This latest trip down to Hythe Beach definitely fell into the second category!
Stocking Up at Fisherman’s Corner
Before heading to the beach, we made our usual stop at Fisherman's Corner Tackle Shop to grab a proper selection of bait for the session. We went fully loaded this time with:
Lug worm
Fresh black lug
Rag worm
Squid
With that bait lineup, we felt confident we’d be covering plenty of options for whatever might be feeding.
Arrival at Hythe – “What Have We Done?”
As soon as we arrived at Hythe Beach with Connor and his mate Eddie, we had that moment of doubt…
The wind was absolutely ripping through, the temperature felt colder than expected, and the sea had that moody look about it. You know when you step out of the van and instantly question your life choices? That was us.
But once you’ve made the journey and you’ve got good bait, you crack on. So we layered up, got the rods sorted, and settled in for the day.

Fishing Through the Wind & Spray
Conditions were tough. The wind made casting interesting to say the least, and we were getting steadily wind-blown and lightly sprayed throughout the session. It wasn’t comfortable, but it was fishable — and sometimes those challenging days are the most memorable.
We fished hard but ultimately decided to call it a day about an hour before high tide. The cold had worked its way through us, and the thought of warming up (and grabbing a well-earned kebab on the way home) became too tempting to ignore!
The Catch Report
Although nothing sizeable or table-worthy showed up, there were steady bites throughout the session, which kept things interesting.

The Rockling Saying… 🤔
There’s an old fisherman’s saying: “If the rockling are about, you might as well go home.”
And while there’s definitely a bit of truth in that at times, this session proved that even when the rockling move in, there’s still a bit of fun to be had. Fishing isn’t always about trophies — sometimes it’s about the challenge, the laughs, and braving the elements together.
Final Thoughts
Hythe didn’t produce anything spectacular this time, but it gave us:
A solid day’s fishing
Plenty of bites
A proper battle with the weather
And a good excuse for a hot kebab on the way home
Sometimes you win big, sometimes you just win the experience. And despite Mother Nature battering us, it was still a fun day out with the boys.
