Battling the Wind at Dungeness: Whiting, Dogfish & a Flounder
There’s something special about heading back to Dungeness — a place packed with fishing history and the kind of magic that keeps you coming back, no matter the forecast. The wind wasn’t doing us any favours this trip, but we thought we’d give it a go in the hope of finding a few late-season bass.
The Setup & the Bait
As always, bait was sorted from M.M. Richardsons, and it was absolutely spot-on — fresh lug, squid, and mackerel ready for action. We fished a mix of 3-hook flappers (size 2) for general bites and a couple of 3/0 bass rigs in case the big silver slabs showed up.
The Session
From the very first cast, the whiting were all over it. Non-stop action, though not quite the target species we were after!
The dogfish soon joined in and kept the rods rattling well into the night. It might not have been the bass bonanza we hoped for, but there’s something satisfying about a busy session when the conditions are stacked against you.
Among the small flatfish that came ashore, Connor managed to land a lovely flounder — big enough for the table. That one came home for dinner, and it was absolutely delicious!
The Magic of Dungeness
Even when the fishing is tough, there’s something about Dungeness that just keeps drawing you back. The shingle, the sound of the waves, the history of the place — it’s where legends were made, and every session brings a bit of that old spirit back.
Fishing alongside my son, sharing laughs, and just being out there — that’s what it’s all about.

Final Thoughts
The bass might have avoided us this round, but as always, the experience made it all worthwhile. The gear held up perfectly, the bait performed beautifully, and the company couldn’t have been better.
