Dreaming of Bass at Hythe: A Day of Fishing, Food & Fireworks
A Promising Start
We headed to Hythe Beach full of optimism. The water had a lovely coloured hue, a bit of a lump to it, and all the makings of a perfect day to tempt a bass. I was already dreaming of that silver prize… though I should’ve taken the hint when I said dreaming!
The morning kicked off well, though, with Connor catching a small pouting on his first cast, which felt like a great omen for the day. I was busy cooking up some breakfast sausage muffins on the beach — because fishing on an empty stomach is just bad planning!
A Quiet Day… Then Everything Changed
Despite the promising start, the daytime session was dead quiet. The tide came and went with not even a knock on the rod tips. Still, there’s something peaceful about being there, soaking in the sea air and just enjoying the calm.
As night fell, things took a turn for the better. Suddenly, the rods came alive! We started catching dogfish, whiting, pouting, and a few eels, keeping us busy under the lights.
Then came the highlight of the night — a lovely sole that was big enough for the table. That one’s already on its way toward my belly, and it tasted as good as it looked!
Good Company, Great Moments
One of the best things about these trips is the company. Connor and I had a good laugh all day — he even got a bit wound up at one point and put me in a headlock on the beach! 😂
To top it all off, we got treated to a free fireworks display lighting up the night sky. It was one of those moments that reminds you why you go fishing — it’s not just about the fish, it’s about the memories.

The wind was in our faces, but it wasn’t strong enough to ruin the fun. Sometimes, those are the sessions that stick with you the most — not because of what you caught, but because of how much you enjoyed it.

Final Thoughts
It might not have been the bass bonanza I was dreaming of, but it was still a brilliant day out. Good food, good fun, and good company — that’s what fishing’s really about.
Can’t wait to get back down there soon and hopefully see that rod bend over with a proper Hythe bass next time.
