Fishing In Palamós Spain – Connor’s 16th Birthday! | Part 2
Share
Part 2 of our Palamós adventure turned into one of the most memorable days of the trip so far.

The morning started with us needing to waste a bit of time before the tackle shop La Dorada opened, so we decided to head over to the harbour and try to track down Divateam to see about booking a boat trip during our stay.

Honestly, the harbour in Palamós is absolutely stunning.

Boats stretched as far as the eye could see, the water was unbelievably clear and full of life, and everywhere you looked there was something interesting to see. Unfortunately by the time we arrived everything was still closed, but the walk itself made the trip worthwhile.

Connor managed to get some amazing underwater footage by sticking the camera beneath the surface, capturing huge numbers of fish swimming around the harbour walls and marina. We also stumbled across a few interesting little fishing spots and hidden areas around the rocks, although I wasn’t brave enough to climb down some of them in case I ended up falling straight into the sea.

With time still left before the tackle shop opened, we headed back to the beach while the weather was holding up.

I decided to go for a swim while Connor stood on the beach commentating about how there was a “beach whale” swimming around — clearly aimed at me. Eventually I convinced him to get in the water as well, and despite his protests I’m pretty sure he enjoyed it.

Once La Dorada finally opened, we went in to grab some fishing gear for the holiday. We weren’t looking for anything too expensive or over the top, just some affordable setups that would allow us to fish while in Spain.

We ended up buying:
Two 14ft 3-piece beachcasters
A telescopic rod and reel setup
A lure rod
Lures
Tackle boxes
Bait and various tackle bits

Armed with new gear and full of optimism, we headed straight to the beach for a quick lure fishing session. Sadly the fishing gods weren’t on our side just yet, and the only thing Connor managed to catch was a plastic bag full of weed.

The following day was a special one because Connor officially turned 16 years old.

After a well-earned lay in, we headed out for lunch and found a brilliant kebab shop that was exactly what we needed. Bellies full, we made our way back down to Palamós beach and tried fishing both the beach and nearby rocks.

Unfortunately the weather had completely different plans for us.

The rain started hammering down, the wind picked up and before long we were both absolutely soaked through and freezing cold. After struggling for bites and not catching anything, we eventually decided enough was enough and started making our way back feeling a little disappointed.

But then something changed.
As we walked along the beach, we suddenly noticed loads of fish swimming right along the shoreline practically at our feet. At the same time, the weather began easing off.We looked at each other and decided it had to be a sign to stop and have one final go.

For a while, nothing happened. Then a couple of people came over to chat with us and almost immediately my rod suddenly pulled over.
Finally, after days of trying, I had landed my very first fish in the Mediterranean Sea.
I was absolutely buzzing.

I believe it was some kind of bream, although I’m definitely no expert when it comes to Mediterranean species. Regardless of what it was, it felt amazing finally catching something in such a beautiful place.

Connor still hadn’t managed a proper fish though. Apart from another angler’s lost lure, luck just wasn’t on his side. You could tell he desperately wanted to catch one, especially considering it was his birthday. I’m honestly not ashamed to admit I looked up at the clouds and quietly asked God for a little favour.

Not long afterwards, Connor’s rod finally went over and he landed his own bream — and yes, his fish was bigger than mine.

Seeing how happy he was in that moment honestly made the entire trip worthwhile.

We managed to get some brilliant footage of him carefully releasing the fish back into the crystal-clear Mediterranean water before deciding to finally call it a day and head back to warm up.

Even though the fishing was slow at times, there’s something magical about Palamós. The scenery, atmosphere and simple moments shared together made this one of those days we’ll both remember forever.

Most importantly, Connor had an amazing 16th birthday — and that’s what the trip was really all about.
