Fishing Through The Fog – A Forgotten Ramsgate Harbour Session

Every now and then you come across something you've completely forgotten about.

That's exactly what happened while I was sorting through old footage recently. Hidden away amongst a backlog of videos was this fishing session from the 9th of March that somehow never got edited.

Normally, a session with no fish wouldn't make it to the channel months later.

But after watching the footage back, I realised this trip wasn't really about the fishing.

It was about the atmosphere.

For this session, Connor and I headed over to Ramsgate Harbour Arm on what can only be described as a seriously foggy day.

The fog was thick from the moment we arrived.

Visibility was limited, the sea blended into the sky and much of the harbour disappeared into a blanket of grey. It created a completely different feel compared to the bright sunny sessions we're all used to.

When we first got there, we were the only people around.

Eventually a few other anglers arrived, but thanks to the fog it still felt like we had the entire harbour to ourselves.

There's something strangely calming about fishing in those conditions.

The world feels quieter.

The usual distractions disappear.

Everything seems to slow down.

I've always enjoyed foggy days because they create a feeling of isolation in the best possible way. It's almost as if you're wrapped inside your own little fishing world for a few hours.

Maybe it's just me, but I'd happily take a misty, peaceful morning over a crowded venue any day of the week.

As for the fishing itself, there really isn't much of a catch report to write about.

The rods remained stubbornly quiet throughout the session and no fish decided to make an appearance.

That said, Connor did manage to catch something, A whelk!!

Not exactly the trophy fish we were hoping for, but it certainly added a bit of entertainment to an otherwise quiet day.

Seeing it brought back plenty of memories for me. Years ago, before Tides and Tribe ever existed, I worked aboard fishing boats where we regularly fished whelk pots. It's not something I come across very often these days, so it was actually quite nice seeing one again.

Despite the lack of fish, I never considered the session a failure.

Fishing isn't always about what ends up on the end of your line.

Sometimes it's about being outdoors.

Sometimes it's about spending time with family.

Sometimes it's about enjoying a place when nobody else is around.

And sometimes it's simply about appreciating the atmosphere.

This trip ticked all of those boxes.

Would a fish or two have been nice?

Of course.

But looking back through the footage months later, what stood out wasn't the lack of catches.

It was the fog.

The silence.

The peaceful surroundings.

And those are the moments that often stay with you longest.

So while this may be one of the latest uploads we've ever posted, it's one that felt worth sharing.

After all, not every fishing adventure needs a big catch to make it memorable.
