Fishing Trip to Ramsgate Harbour – Great Food and Fresh Bait
There are some fishing trips that just tick every box, and our latest session down at Ramsgate Harbour was definitely one of them. From finally meeting a long-time supporter in person, to experimenting with bait tactics, enjoying great weather, and landing a nice mix of species — it turned into a proper all-round day to remember.
Starting the Day the Right Way – Meeting Uncle Kev 🍔
Our day actually started before we even got near the water. For quite some time now, we’ve been chatting with one of our subscribers whose Uncle Kev we’d been meaning to meet. It had been a long time coming, and we were genuinely glad that the day had finally arrived.
Kev is currently helping out at his family-run burger van, Grillz on Wheels, which is based just behind Tesco in Manston. He invited us down for some breakfast before the fishing session, and honestly, it was the perfect way to kick off the day. Great food, a warm welcome, and a proper chat with someone who shares the same passion for fishing — you couldn’t ask for a better start.
Kev is a true kindred spirit, and it felt like we’d known him for years rather than just meeting for the first time. Massive shout-out to him and the team at Grillz on Wheels — if you’re ever in the area and feeling hungry, it’s well worth stopping by for some top-quality food and friendly service.
Stocking Up on Fresh Bait
With breakfast sorted and spirits high, our next stop was Fisherman's Corner Tackle Shop to pick up some fresh bait for the session. We decided to keep things simple and effective by going with fresh black lug worm, a reliable bait choice for harbour fishing and one that has proven itself time and time again.
There’s always something exciting about walking into a tackle shop before a session — the anticipation builds, the plan comes together, and you start visualising how the day might unfold.

Arriving at the Harbour & Assessing Conditions
When we arrived at Ramsgate Harbour, we were greeted with lovely fishing conditions. The weather was nice, with a mild temperature and a gentle breeze drifting across the harbour — just enough to keep things comfortable without making fishing difficult. The sea state was calm, and the tide was still pushing in, which is often a productive time to get the rods set up and ready.
We decided early on that we would fish right through until high tide, as the flooding tide in harbours can bring fish closer to structure, walls, and feeding areas.
Our Setup & Fishing Tactics
For this session, we kept our approach straightforward but strategic. We both fished with two rods each, all rigged with size 2 hooks — a versatile hook size that gives you a good chance of hooking a variety of species you might encounter in a harbour environment.
Our tactic was:
One rod cast out at distance to cover open water
One rod dropped straight down or close in against the harbour wall
This close-range tactic can often be overlooked, but harbour walls hold plenty of life, and fish frequently patrol these areas looking for easy meals.
Connor also mixed things up throughout the day by occasionally switching to a pulley rig to try his luck and see if it would make a difference compared to our standard setup. It’s always great to see him experimenting and learning, which is all part of becoming a better angler.
First Bites & A Lovely Flounder
As the tide continued to push in, the bites started to come. Patience paid off when the rod fishing closer to the wall produced a lovely flounder measuring 30cm. A beautiful, healthy fish and absolutely perfect for the dinner table — a proper reward for sticking with the tactic of fishing close to structure.
Flounder are always a welcome catch in the harbour, and it just goes to show that sometimes you don’t need to cast miles out to find fish.
Connor’s First Blenny – A Proper Win
Not long after, Connor managed to land a blenny. While it may not have been the biggest fish of the day, it was a first species for him, and that always makes it special. First catches are what fishing memories are built on, and seeing his reaction made the moment even better.
Moments like that remind us that fishing isn’t always about size — it’s about the experience, learning, and the excitement of what might come up next.
The Most Unusual Bait Choice of the Day
In true experimental fashion, Connor decided to try something completely different during the session — a baby chicken head as bait! Safe to say it was more like a chicken-flavoured lure than a serious bait tactic, but it definitely gave us a good laugh and kept the session entertaining.
That’s the beauty of fishing — sometimes the unusual ideas create the best memories, even if they don’t always produce the biggest results.
A Surprise Catch Near the End – Baby Bass
As we approached high tide and the session was winding down, I managed to hook into a small baby bass. Although it was a small fish, it was absolutely stunning and a great way to round off the day. Bass are always a joy to catch, no matter the size, and it showed that there was a nice mix of species moving through the harbour.
Great Atmosphere & Friendly Encounters
Another highlight of the day was the people we met along the way. Harbour fishing often brings together anglers from all walks of life, and we had some great conversations throughout the session. Anyone who knows us knows we love talking fishing with anyone who will listen!
Sharing stories, tactics, and laughs with fellow anglers and the public always adds to the overall experience and makes the day even more enjoyable.
Why Days Like This Mean So Much
More than anything, this trip was about quality time. Spending the day fishing with my boy, sharing laughs, trying new tactics, and simply enjoying being outdoors together is what it’s all about.
The weather played its part, the tide was on our side, the tactics worked, and the catches — from flounder to blenny to a baby bass — made it a varied and rewarding session.
Add in a fantastic breakfast, meeting Uncle Kev after such a long time, and plenty of laughs throughout the day, and you’ve got the recipe for a perfect fishing trip.
We fished right up until high tide, packed up with smiles on our faces, and headed home already looking forward to the next adventure. Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about the fish — it’s about the memories made along the way.
