Returning To Western Undercliff – A Familiar Mark And A Relaxing Day's Fishing
Sometimes it's not about chasing huge fish or breaking personal bests.
Sometimes it's simply about revisiting a place that holds good memories and enjoying a day by the sea.
This fishing session was actually filmed on 26th April, but due to a busy schedule and a lack of editing time, it's taken a little longer than planned to get the video uploaded.
For this trip, Connor and I decided to return to Western Undercliff in Ramsgate, a fishing mark we hadn't visited since before Tides and Tribe even existed.
With plenty of memories tied to the location, it felt like the perfect place for a relaxed session and a bit of nostalgia.
As always, we arrived early.
While I started sorting tackle and getting organised, Connor headed off to search for fresh peeler crabs amongst the rocks. Fortunately, he managed to find enough live crabs to keep us supplied throughout the session
Alongside the fresh crab, we'd also brought a selection of proven baits including sprats, sardines and a few other offerings.
Our main hope was to find a bass or two.
Unfortunately, the fish hadn't read our plans.
While the bass failed to make an appearance, another familiar species certainly did.
Dogfish.
They're not everyone's favourite catch, but they do provide a bit of action when other species aren't playing ball.
During the session I managed to land a couple of dogfish, while Connor endured one of those frustrating days where everything seemed to go wrong. Despite a few bites and signs of activity, he couldn't quite connect with a fish.
Naturally, this meant the session instantly became a competition.
As I often remind Connor, whenever I'm winning it's definitely a competition. Whenever he's winning, apparently it's just a normal day out fishing.
For once, I was more than happy to accept the victory.
One thing that continues to make Western Undercliff an attractive fishing venue is its accessibility.
Unlike many marks that require long walks, steep climbs or carrying equipment over difficult terrain, this venue allows anglers to park nearby and be fishing within minutes.
It's ideal for short sessions, family trips or anyone looking for a straightforward day's fishing.
That said, there is one limitation.
Your fishing window is relatively short.
Because of the flat ground and tidal nature of the mark, you generally get around four hours of productive fishing time if you arrive as the tide begins flooding. The water pushes in quickly and disappears just as quickly once the tide turns.
Good timing is essential if you want to make the most of the venue.
Despite the modest catches, the real highlight of the day was the setting itself.
Western Undercliff offers some truly impressive scenery. Towering cliffs form a dramatic backdrop behind the anglers while the open sea stretches out in front.
On this particular day the weather was kind to us and the location looked absolutely picture-perfect.
It served as a reminder that successful fishing trips aren't always measured by the size or number of fish caught.
Sometimes success is simply getting outdoors, spending quality time together, enjoying nature and sharing a few laughs along the way.
Would we have preferred a few bass?
Of course.
Were a couple of dogfish enough to make the trip worthwhile?
Absolutely.
At the end of the day, any opportunity to spend time outdoors with family, a fishing rod in hand and the sea in front of you is time well spent.
And that's exactly what this session delivered.
