Hythe Beach Fishing – A Windy Morning but a Mixed Bag

Hythe Beach Fishing – A Windy Morning but a Mixed Bag

A 5-Hour Drive, A Quick Nap, and a Fresh Start

By the time we reached Hythe, it had been a long five hours behind the wheel. Tired doesn’t even begin to describe it. Before we could even think about fishing, we grabbed a small sleep in the car — the kind of scruffy, uncomfortable nap you only take when you’re exhausted and desperate.

When we finally stepped out onto the shingle, the sun was lifting, the tide was working, and despite the wind, the sea looked alive. There was a chop on the water, the air had that salty bite to it, and everything felt like a clean slate.

Straight into the Fish

Before I even had a chance to settle myself, Connor was already into the action. His first cast hit the water, the tip bounced, and up came a whiting. Then another. And another. It quickly became clear we were finally in the right place.

No blank for him today — not even close!

Within minutes, it became a steady rhythm: cast out, wait a moment, reel in another whiting. When your line is tight and the bites keep coming, tiredness disappears fast.

My Turn — And the Mixed Bag Begins

It didn’t take long before I started catching too. My rods came to life with whiting as well, and once they were in full swing, the flatties started joining the action.

We had:

Dabs (including two lovely keepers for lunch)

Small plaice

Other small flatfish

A few pouting

Plenty of whiting in between

We didn’t keep track of exact numbers this time. After the long day at Chesil and the overnight haul to Hythe, we were both running low on energy. Instead, we let the session be what it was meant to be — relaxed, fun, and full of small surprises.

A couple of whiting also came home with us for homemade fish cakes, which always feels like a bonus prize.

Friendly Visitors

One of the most heart-warming moments of the morning had nothing to do with fish. While we were working the shoreline, we were approached by two friendly young ladies, Millie and Alisha (we hope we’ve got the names right!).

They stopped to watch what we were doing, asked loads of questions, held some of the fish, and genuinely seemed to enjoy the experience. Their positive energy was infectious, and it gave us a brilliant break in the middle of the session.

They even requested a shout-out for the video — so of course, we were more than happy to give one. Moments like these remind us just how many good, kind, interesting people you meet while out fishing. It’s not just about the catch — it’s about the connection.

A Perfect Finish to a Challenging Trip

Despite the wind and the previous day’s exhaustion, our Hythe session was exactly what we needed. A lively sea. A steady stream of fish. A mixed bag of species. A couple of keepers for lunch. And a pair of friendly visitors who made the morning brighter.

After the disappointment of Chesil, Hythe truly redeemed the entire trip. It's these moments — the unexpected wins, the shared laughter, and the simple joy of being outdoors together — that make father-and-son fishing so special.

Here’s to the next adventure. Tight lines, everyone!
