Home made 2 up 1 down rig and single hook float. Fresh dug blow lug was the only bait used

I started on the 2 up 1 down rig and after I caught the first small schoolie the knot between my shock leader and mai line broke. As I had no way of casting a decent size lead I switched to float and pulled in the 2nd Schoolie. I had loads of small bites on both the bottom rig and the float but the bites were quick tugs and never developed into hookups. I think the clarity of the water may have made the bass less bold I taking the bait.
