Portugal Fishing Adventure Part 1 – First Impressions of Quarteira

After what felt like an eternity of waiting, me and Connor finally managed to get out of the country again and head off on our latest fishing adventure.

The plan was simple. Enjoy some fishing, soak up the sunshine and hopefully catch a few new species along the way. Unlike our usual trips, however, we decided this holiday would be about more than just fishing. We wanted to experience everything the area had to offer and bring you along for the journey.

This video is the first part of a five-part series documenting our trip from start to finish.

Almost immediately after arriving, we headed straight down to the beachfront.

During the winter months, Quarteira had suffered significant storm damage, with large sections of the beach being badly affected. We'd seen photographs before travelling and honestly feared the worst.

Thankfully, our concerns disappeared within minutes.

The beach had been completely restored and looked absolutely stunning. Golden sand stretched along the coastline, the sea was crystal clear, and the blue skies completed what can only be described as a picture-perfect setting.

Instantly, we knew we were going to enjoy our time here.

While exploring the local rock marks, we found ourselves becoming increasingly frustrated.

The rocks themselves were fantastic, providing easy and safe access to some excellent-looking fishing spots. Unfortunately, the area had been spoiled by discarded fishing line and various bits of rubbish left behind by previous anglers.

It's something we've spoken about many times on the channel, but seeing it abroad was just as disappointing.

Rather than ignore it, me and Connor spent time collecting as much of the rubbish as we could and carrying it back to the bins.

The frustrating part?

The bins were literally positioned at the entrance to the rocks.

There really is no excuse.

Thankfully, once away from that area, the rest of Quarteira was exceptionally clean and well maintained, showing just how much pride the local community takes in the area.

That evening we headed down to Praia da Gaivota, which we believe translates to "Seagull Beach."

Without having visited a tackle shop yet, we were relying on supermarket squid for bait.

Unfortunately, things didn't go according to plan.

Every cast seemed to come back stripped clean, with tiny fish or other creatures removing our bait almost instantly. Looking back, we strongly suspect the hooks we were using were simply too small for the conditions and species present.

At the time, though, we were left scratching our heads and wondering what was going wrong.

The following morning we decided to fish the harbour arm at Quarteira Harbour.

This turned out to be another lesson learned.

We'd travelled light and only taken a lure rod with us, thinking it would be enough to explore the area and perhaps pick up a few fish.

As soon as we arrived, we realised we'd made a mistake.

The location deserved much heavier gear and a more serious approach than we had brought with us.

Connor gave it a good effort regardless, but once again we came away fishless.

The saving grace was the scenery.

The harbour and surrounding coastline are absolutely stunning and made the trip worthwhile even without the fishing success.

Things then took another frustrating turn.

We visited a local tackle shop and purchased some worms, only to discover they were dead and in terrible condition.

To make matters worse, a meal we grabbed shortly afterwards was equally disappointing.

After two poor experiences in quick succession, we started to wonder if the trip was going to live up to expectations.

Thankfully, things were about to improve.

That evening we headed down to Quarteira Beach armed with our less-than-perfect bait and decided to give it one final go.

The fishing was slow, but eventually persistence paid off.

I managed to land our first fish of the holiday, a small Saddled Bream.

It wasn't a huge fish, but after the struggles we'd experienced so far, it felt like a massive victory and instantly lifted our spirits.

The following morning we decided to swap rods for water slides and headed to Aquashow Waterpark.

What a brilliant decision that turned out to be.

The park was fantastic from start to finish, with great rides, excellent facilities and some of the best food we'd had since arriving.

The highlight for me was undoubtedly the Free Fall slide.

To say it was intense would be an understatement. For a few seconds I genuinely thought my life was flashing before my eyes!

It was exactly the kind of fun day we needed and reminded us why we'd decided to make this trip about more than just fishing.

On the way back from Aquashow we stumbled across Algarve Pesca.

This was the tackle shop we'd been looking for all along.

Quality bait, friendly staff and genuinely helpful advice.

The difference compared to our previous experience was night and day.

If you're visiting Quarteira and planning to fish, we'd strongly recommend making Algarve Pesca your first stop.

Finding a reliable tackle shop completely changed our outlook and gave us confidence that the fishing side of the trip was finally heading in the right direction.

Before heading back, we stopped off at the famous Quarteira Swing for a laugh and spent some time checking out the beach gym.

Simple moments like these are often the ones that make a holiday memorable.

By the end of the day, our excitement had fully returned.

While our first impressions of some local businesses hadn't been great, we quickly realised we'd simply been unlucky with our initial choices.

Now armed with quality bait, better local knowledge and renewed confidence, we couldn't wait to see what the rest of the trip had in store.
