Sandgate to Hythe Fishing the Beaches 9th October 2025
We set off aiming for Dungeness for this trip, but when we arrived it was rammed — way too busy for us. We like our fishing quiet and simple, not shoulder-to-shoulder, so we packed up and rolled along the coast until we found a quieter bit of beach near Sandgate.
Turned out to be a good shout, because not long in I had a proper surprise — my first ever Ballan Wrasse! Absolute stunner of a fish and a real first for me. It’s one I’ll be keeping and cooking up, so there’ll be a follow-up video on that soon.
Our mate Aaron joined me and Connor for the day too, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Aaron got snagged and snapped a rod early on, and Connor seemed to find every snag on the beach after that. The fishing was slow overall, so after a while we decided to pack up and move on to Hythe West Parade to try and save the session.
At Hythe, the sea was calm, the weather was spot on, and the vibes were good — but the fish still weren’t exactly playing ball. Connor ended up blanking, I only managed a couple of baby plaice, and Aaron was the one who came good with 4 plaice and a dogfish
Still, can’t complain — it was one of those days that reminds you why you do it. Great weather, good company, and plenty of laughs (especially at my constant rambling about that Ballan Wrasse — seriously, count how many times I mention it in the video 😂).

We were all fishing simple flapper rigs baited with lugworm, and even though the results weren’t amazing, the day itself was spot on. Some friendly chats with people walking by, a bit of banter between us, and that feeling of being out on the open coast — you can’t beat it.
We’ll definitely be heading back down that way soon for another go, hopefully with the fish more switched on next time. Until then, tight lines and fresh air — just how we like it.
